Types of Cylindrical Roller Bearings
Cylindrical roller bearings are used for a wide range of applications. Some examples of their use are power transmission, metal recycling, petroleum production, briquetting machines, and rolling mills. They are also used in plastic machinery, electric motors, pulp and paper machinery, and many other applications.
Cylindrical roller bearings can be mechanically mounted, hydraulically mounted, or thermally mounted. They are available in single and double row designs. These bearings feature a lubrication groove on the outer ring, allowing for a smooth running surface. A molded polyamide cage may be added for more durability.
The inner race of cylindrical bearings is usually a single piece. In addition to providing the proper clearance for running the bearing, the inner ring provides the necessary contact between the rollers and the raceway. This improved geometry also enhances the lubricant film formation on the surface of the bearing.
Double row cylindrical roller bearings have high radial rigidity and are designed for heavy radial loads. These bearings are commonly used for the main shafts of precision machine tools. Typically, they are available in sizes that are similar to those of single row bearings. However, their design allows for interchangeability.
Depending on the application, cylindrical roller bearings can be made with cages in pressed steel, brass, or machined steel. Sheet steel is usually the most cost-effective material. Other materials can be molded or stamped. Sometimes, the cages are finned or have tins.
Cylindrical roller bearings are available with full complement of rollers. The minimum radial load is P> C0r/60 for continuous operation. Single row bearings are primarily used in general industrial machinery with low speeds. They are available as open or closed designs. If you are unsure of the type of bearing you need, consult a product specialist or the manufacturer. You can also download a complete specification online.
ABMA series bearings are suitable for a wide range of applications. Generally, they are interchangeable with other manufacturers' bearings. They have a drilled pocket finger bronze retainer. They can be supplied with an alternate cage, which is machined brass or stamped steel. Alternatively, you can choose a multi-row version, which is suitable for a range of applications. ABMA series bearings can be fitted with lubrication holes, and some of them can even be fitted with a self-aligning feature.
When comparing the different types of cylindrical roller bearings, it is important to understand how the bearings are supported. Typically, the ribs on the bearing rings are subject to alternating stresses, and it is important that the ribs are supported over the entire height of the bearing. Small misalignments may cause damaging stresses.
Single row cylindrical roller bearings are generally used for applications where the radial load is not too heavy. They are designed for heavy axial loads in one direction, and therefore do not allow for radial displacement in the opposite direction. Typical applications for these bearings include oil and gas extraction equipment, and plastic machinery.
SKF offers a wide variety of cylindrical roller bearings. Besides metric dimensioned products, they also offer bearings in ABMA and ISO sizes. The company also supplies self-aligning, sealed-clean, and lubrication hole versions.
